Dr. Firas Husban: Leading Spine Care Innovation in the MENA Region
MENA’s First OLIF Surgeon Transforms Lives Through Minimally Invasive Techniques
In 2022, Dr. Firas Husban became the first surgeon in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region to perform Oblique Lumbar Interbody Fusion (OLIF) surgery. Previously, OLIF – a groundbreaking minimally invasive spine procedure – was only accessible to patients overseas.
This achievement marked a turning point for spine care across the region, bringing world-class surgical techniques to patients closer to their homes. Especially those who previously had to travel abroad for such advanced treatment.
Why OLIF Matters
Unlike traditional open spine surgery, OLIF offers patients smaller incisions, reduced blood loss, shorter recovery times, and lower complication risks. Dr. Husban has since performed dozens of successful OLIF procedures with outstanding results — treating patients from adolescents to those in their 80s.

Proven Results Across All Ages
From Mohammad Al-Shammari, an 81-year-old patient from Saudi Arabia who regained mobility, to Dalia, a 26-year-old from Iraq who returned to full activity, and Zainab, whose procedure has remained successful for over a decade—Dr. Husban’s cases demonstrate that OLIF delivers lasting outcomes for patients of all backgrounds.
Beyond Surgery: Building Regional Capacity
As Regional Chief Officer of Spine Centers & Fellowships for AOspine Middle East and an international lecturer, Dr. Husban is actively training the next generation of spine surgeons. His work is elevating spine surgery standards across the entire MENA region.
